Elche, or Elx, originally formed as the Iberian city of Helike, is the largest municipality in the Alicante province, after Alicante itself, and is the capital of the area known as Bajo Vinalopó.
As well as being the second most populated city in the Alicante province, Elche is also the third largest in the whole of the Valencia region.
As a municipality, Elche includes popular local places such as Santa Pola and Crevillente.
Elche is famous for palm trees, so much so, it is the only place in the world where the artisan elaboration of the white palm persists.
Every year, at Easter, Elche sends palms to dignitaries around the world, including the King of Spain, and the Pope.
In the centre of Elche, you will find an abundance of shops and shopping centres, catering for everything from shoes, another product the area is famous for, and clothing, to electrical items and household goods.
On the coast, you will also find a wide range of beaches, perfect for a dip in the Medditeranean sea. The city also has a safari park, and museums, so there´s always something to do in Elche.
Elche is also home to the principal airport serving the Costa Blanca, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, to give it its full name, located in the town of El Altet.
